A 23-year-old Santa Rosa woman was arrested after police said she entered a residence on Colgan Creek Drive without knowing the occupants, picked up a young child and carried the child upstairs.
The incident occurred at about 6:40 p.m. Saturday in the 1500 block of Colgan Creek Drive, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department. Police said the child was out of the mother’s sight for about 30 seconds and was not injured.
Authorities alleged that Nyla Cristina Ponce put the child down upstairs, entered a bathroom and searched through drawers before leaving the home on foot. Officers later found her near Hearn Avenue and Dutton Meadow, police said.
Police also accused Ponce of striking an officer with a water bottle during the arrest. The officer was not seriously injured, according to the department.
Ponce, who police identified as a Santa Rosa resident, was booked into the Sonoma County Jail on allegations including kidnapping, burglary and child endangerment. The circumstances remained under investigation, and police said the motive was unknown at the time of the report.
The allegations have not been adjudicated in court.
